Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s pieces on
space both were very enjoyable and I found myself genuinely interested in both
the video and text. Starting with the text, “The case for Space” he is very adamant
on why Americans should still be supportive aof NASA as a whole and why funding
their programs are important to everyone’s lives. He mentions all the
advancements the medical field has had because of the discoveries in space. Also, he touches on JFK and the space race
not so long ago and why Americans need to be invested like that once again. He
wants American citizens to gain their curiosity once again on space. Tyson also
talks about China and their goal in reaching Mars in the 2030’s. He would wish
for America to be motivated and inspired by Chinas efforts and want to join in
the same goals. This audience in my opinion is for politicians and the wealthy
to fund NASA to help achieve goals. He references many politicians’ campaigns
like Barak Obama and George Bush. Also, I could see this piece as being a call
for action to the younger generation to step up and think of their future and
Americans future in science and space exploration. If something is not done,
space funding could be wounded and we could be set back behind other countries
that value it more.
On the other
hand, StarTalk ithe audience here is more for people that do not know much
about space and the space program. Tyson invites comedians to make learning
about space casual and fun and makes me think another audience would be younger
adults because of the language and popularity of comedians. Another audience
may be people that enjoy learning about space and would rather do so in a
relaxed atmosphere instead of a typical daunting classroom or articles. This
piece shows how space does not have to be for geniuses but for everyone and how
interesting it is.
When it comes to overlapping, the
Hubble is very prevalent in both pieces. In the first piece, Tyson talks about
the Hubble and how it has brought Americans so many beautiful pictures and that
is why they have felt involved in space exploration, in StarTalk he talks about
the importance of the Hubble and all the money that has gone into this piece of
equipment. His stylistic approach is also different through observations I have
stated above. StarTalk is definitely more relaxed and silly not only through
the atmosphere it is created in but also its outlet. Most podcasts are used to
reach viewers on a more personal level. On the other hand, The Case for Space
is more scholarly and Tyson uses this piece to reach a higher educated level of
the country. Not everyone will search literature written on space, most people
that would come across his piece would be interested in the subject and or want
to contribute. This piece would benefit both of those interests.
