After reading N.D. Tyson’s piece “The Case for Space” and
after watching ‘The Astronaut Session,” it is clear that Tyson is an
intellectual who is avid about space exploration and who wishes to educate the
public. Not only is he educating the public but he also entertains them which
draws more people in. Although both pieces are directed at different audiences,
(the written piece being directed at intellectuals, and talk show being
directed at the general public), the overlap in each piece is the desire for
more people, including our own government to gain some knowledge, get involved
and show support for our country’s space program. In “The Case for Space” Tyson
mentions that “When NASA announced plans to cancel an upcoming mission to
service Hubble, owing to a lack of funds and the risks inherent in using an
aging shuttle fleet, the loudest voices of dissent were not those of scientists
but rather those of every day Americans” (Tyson 5). This shows that even though
we as citizens may think that we don’t have any say in official matters, when we
join our voices together we can absolutely be heard, which is the kind of
enthusiasm and support Tyson wishes to continue and grow in our country.
