I found the excerpt from Pedagogy of the Oppressed, "The Banking Concept of Education" to be very eye opening and relevant to anyone who has gone through the education system. I liked the way Paula Freire talks about the "banking concept" of education and how educators fill the students with the information they teach instead of explaining to them why they are learning the information or any information on how is it to be used in life. It creates an image that is easy to see and relate to and throughout the excerpt the theme stays true. I think I enjoyed this because I had never thought of education in this way before. Students are expected to accept any information needed to be memorized and it becomes part of the role they are needed to play in life until they are done with schooling. This also goes for the teacher, he says that teachers are expected to feed the information they think is necessary and needed and he speaks about it as a permanent role. Personally, I can agree to and relate to some of what Freire is talking about but to me it is a bit on the extreme side. I do not think that educators are nearly as harshly represented than they are in this excerpt. I do agree that is becomes somewhat of a mechanical routine between the students and the teacher and somewhere the idea of education gets lost, it becomes more of a routine and expectation than an opportunity. I also agree with the topic of communication and how it is very important between the teacher and the student. I think this makes a very big difference between the harsh way a teacher and student relationship can be and how much success can come from it with good communication.
